Jewish Names Explained: Origins, Meanings, and Why They Matter

From Ashkenazi to Sephardic to Israeli naming traditions — a guide to the names that carry history.

Jewish names are often unique, sometimes hard to pronounce for non-Jewish people, and usually carry meaning that goes beyond the practical. Understanding where names come from and what they signify adds another layer to Jewish identity. Ashkenazi Jewish names (the tradition from Central and Eastern Europe) follow different patterns than Sephardic names (from Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East) or Israeli names chosen in modern Hebrew. Ashkenazi tradition often involves naming after deceased relatives — you would name a child after a grandparent who had passed away. The initial letter might match or the full name might match. This created a kind of genealogical record through names. The practice varies by family custom but the principle is consistent: names carry lineage. Sephardic tradition more commonly names children after living relatives, particularly parents and grandparents. This is a different philosophy — the person named after you is a blessing while you are still here. Israeli naming traditions are often entirely different — names chosen for meaning in modern Hebrew that do not necessarily reference family history. Environmental names (Tamar for palm tree), virtue names (Gal for wave), abstract concepts turned into names. The Israeli project of creating a new society also meant creating a new naming culture. Immigration and diaspora added layers — children got Hebrew names for religious or cultural identity and anglicized names for practical use in their societies. Many Jews have a traditional Hebrew name used in religious contexts and a secular name used in daily life. Your name carries your family's history, your community's choices, and sometimes your parents' hopes for who you would become. That weight is part of being Jewish.
